Embark on Your Journey to Learn-to-Scull

Don’t worry if you missed our Spring Sculling dates. We still want to hear from you and how we can help you learn to scull. Our “Sample Sculling” and “Learn-to-Scull” programs are available throughout the year based on interest and coach availability.
Please fill out the interest form and we will contact you if space becomes available. We take in newcomers almost year ‘round.
Begin with "Sample Sculling" and see if our sport is for you. Then, if you're hooked, enroll in our "Learn-to-Scull" Program and acquire more of the basics. The program is offered in a small-group setting and is highly individualized. Enjoy the outdoors, more specifically the expansive waterways of the California Delta that are a regional treasure.
If you can't make our schedule, you are welcome to participate in private or semi-private sessions that you set up on your own schedule with one of our coaches.

Step 1: Sample Sculling for Adults

"Sample Sculling" is designed to give newcomer adults an introduction to our sport. It has both land and water components. If you are brand new to sculling, you will first learn basic sculling technique using a land rowing machine (i.e. ergometer or "erg"). Then, have the opportunity to get into a wide, stable boat with an experienced "sculling buddy."
Spring 2023 Sample Sculling Dates:
Cost: $25 - suggested contribution, or any amount you can to support our various community activities is greatly welcome. If any contribution is a hardship, you are still most welcome to participate without giving.
How To Enroll: Please pre-register at least 3 days before the day of the session. Complete the registration form here.
All Sample Sculling sessions take place at DSC's boathouse, 4950 Buckley Cove Way in Stockton, California.

Step 2: Learn-to-Scull, Levels I & II
Learn-to-Scull can be accessed after a Sample Sculling session is completed. Learn-to-Scull is designed to bring beginning scullers from learning to scull in a two-person wide-bottomed boat with an expert buddy to being able to scull their own wide-bottomed boat. Eventually they will be able to scull their own narrower, recreational single.
Learn-to-Scull includes Level I and Level II. Each program level is broken up into 4-week segments. Purchase one 4-week package and receive 8 practices. Practices take place on Thursday evenings for land training (until evening light provides us an option) and Saturday mornings on the water (whenever conditions permit). The learning time on the water is very individualized so participants can progress at their own rate.

- Level I is designed to help you take the first steps in learning to scull while helping you gain fitness. We strongly encourage you to complete one of our “Sample Sculling” sessions prior to signing up for LTS Level 1. You will participate one Thursday evening a week to become more adept at sculling technique on the indoor rowing machine (erg) and at using the erg as a fitness tool. On Saturday mornings you will join a group on the water to put what you are learning on land into practice on the water. You will begin in a double-boat with an expert buddy to help teach you and steer your boat. Then we will help you progress to a single-person, narrower recreational shell with pontoons.
- Level II continues where you left off in Level I. You will continue one evening a week to become more adept technically on the indoor rowing machine (erg) and at using it as a fitness tool. During water sessions we will help you progress from a single sculling boat with stabilizing pontoons to rowing the boat without pontoons. You’ll be rowing a recreational single independently (without any “training wheels”).
