Learn to Scull - Spring / Summer 2018
Come and learn to glide through the water in a personal rowing boat! Begin with "Sample Sculling" and see if our sport is for you! Then, when you're hooked, enroll in our "Learn-to-Scull" Program and get more basics under your belt. We offer a special introductory price for the first part of the program. If you find you want to stay with our support, continue with "Learn-to-Scull" and build your skills and knowledge so you can transition into less stable single sculling shells.. The program is offered in a small-group setting and is highly individualized. If you can't make our schedule, you are welcome to participate in private or semi-private sessions that you set up on your own time schedule with one of our coaches.
Step 1: SAMPLE SCULLING
"Sample Sculling" classes are designed to give newcomers an introduction to our sport. "Sample Sculling" has both land and water components. If you are totally new to sculling, you will first learn basic sculling technique using a land rowing machine (i.e. ergometer or "erg") as well as have the opportunity to get into wide, stable boats with an experienced "sculling buddy." This class is designed for just enough commitment (time & cost) to let you know what sculling and DSC are all about. We hope you can find a session below that will accommodate you. If not, please contact us and we’ll see about arranging another session that will work. After you complete "Sample Sculling" you can make the decision to continue to learn and progress to Sculling Level I.

Step 2: Learn-to-Scull Program
“Learn-to-Scull” is a complete program designed to bring beginning scullers from learning to scull in a two-person wide-bottomed boat with an expert buddy to being able to scull their own wide-bottomed boat and eventually to being able to scull their own narrower, recreational single. The program is broken up into four-week segments (“packages”) with 8 meetings during each package, half on a weekday evening for land training (until evening light provides us an option) and the other half on the water (whenever conditions permit) on Saturday mornings. The learning time on the water is very individualized so participants can progress at their own rate. Each 4-week package can be repeated until individuals are ready to take an evaluation to “captain their own boat,” called the “Captain’s Evaluation” or are deemed adequately safe in a recreational single without another sculler or safety launch alongside.
Spring / Summer 2018 Schedule:
- Initially Thursdays, 6-8:00 and Saturdays, 9:30-11:30. Additional times may be offered later in Spring/Summer. On-going throughout the spring/summer/fall
- Begin after successful completion of Sample Sculling.
Cost: $175.00 for each 4-week package which consists of four pairs of Thursday pms and Saturday ams. We offer a special introductory price of $135.00 for the first package you take to give you the opportunity to decide how much of a commitment you want to make to our sport. Our prices are all-inclusive; there are no extra fees for equipment rental. Group size is limited to 4 participants.
Step 3: Novice / Intermediate Sculling
This program is the continuation of the Learn-to-Scull program. Emphasis is on gaining proficiency and safety in recreational singles. Participants complete their "Captain's Evaluation" during this sequence and generally tend to require less supervision on the water.
- Continuation of Learn-to-Scull schedule
- Allows you to progress toward the "Captain's Evaluation" which, when completed, allows you to rent sculling equipment from DSC and go out on your own with a buddy (no coach/safety launch needed).
Cost: Scullers purchase a pass which they can use on any of the scheduled days. A 6-session pass is $120.00 and a 12 session pass is $180.00.
